Located in northern Harlan County, just 15 miles north of Alma, Nebraska, our cattle operation has been dedicated to excellence since its inception in 1992. We began with the purchase of our first commercial females and, after about five years in the cow-calf sector, transitioned into seed stock breeding.
By utilizing technologies like artificial insemination (AI) and embryo transfers, we’ve focused on advancing our herd to produce top-end females for retention and top tier bulls to meet the demands of our customers. For over a decade, we sold bulls Private Treaty, building a reputation for quality and trust. In February 2015, we held our first annual production sale, a milestone that solidified our commitment to serving cattle producers with exceptional genetics and service.
As we continue to grow, our mission remains the same: to provide outstanding cattle that enhance the profitability of our customers and contribute to the success of the beef industry as a whole.
When selecting seed stock either to retain in our herd or to introduce from outside programs, we utilize all tools available to make an educated decision. Our approach to seed stock selection begins with a focus on the fundamental qualities before factoring in EPDs, pedigrees, individual performance, or ultrasound data. We prioritize structural soundness, emphasizing solid feet and legs, functional teat and udders, appropriate frame size , and calm disposition. Once these essential traits are ensured, we refine their physical attributes while maintaining high standards for calving ease, growth, and carcass excellence.
From the very start we have always emphasized on the quality of the female first as the cow factory lays the foundation for generations to come. Highly productive, sound functioning cows that are easy fleshing with good teat and udders, maternal instinct, and good disposition is what drives our program forward. We utilize AI and embryo transfer to incorporate proven breed leading genetics of the Gelbvieh and Angus breeds. We strive to stick to our core values as breeders and not get caught up in chasing the latest fad. We consistently select for genetics that advances our herd phenotypically, genetically, and through carcass merit.
Development of the bulls initially starts at calving. We calve our cows in January-March to ensure our bulls are old enough and fully developed by breeding season to be mature aggressive breeders. We wean our bull calves mid August where they are weighed and evaluated phenotypically. They are then started on a low energy high roughage diet. After adjusting to feed we slowly work them into a high roughage ration designed to provide a 3.5 ADG. As they grow and develop we continuously cull the bulls that do not fit the criteria we set as a standard for our operation. We monitor health and track performance throughout the fall and winter months. Prior to the sale we ensure that all bulls pass their fertility exam and are carcass ultra sounded to provide our customers all the information to make an educated evaluation and purchase of bulls that will advance their cattle operation in the direction of their vision.
